This video covers neurological studies shed light on the objective perspective of why reason and evidence fail to influence political ideology. It’s a good piece, and a subject which deserves urgent attention.
In the video, we learn that subjects in the studies do not report or recognize their unconscious bias even when it is pointed out to them, and therefore it is up to us to question our own processes to overcome our conditioning and heal our brains.
“Introspection, self knowledge, therapy is so essential, because otherwise you’re being run by forces that are unconscious, and you will only create the illusion of self,(…) after the fact, (…) you will make up a story about what you did.” 16:29
“Consciously processed information can override these emotional and experience-driven biases if we devote enough time and attention to the decision.” 17:02
“The brain can absorb about 11 million pieces of information a second, of which it can process about 40 consciously” 18:03
“The ideological brain is an injured brain, it is a damaged brain and it needs rehabilitation to make it better, it is not just argument with reason and evidence.” 20:53
Good stuff, and stuff that ties into yesterday’s Neuromarketing chat (#nmchat on Twitter). What it’s got me thinking about is Attention, and I’m going to post on that as soon as I get a chance, because it’s a big deal.
Here are three other outstanding videos if you have not already seen, which relate to this whole topic in some way. The common theme I think is how we really are addicted to seeing and doing things in the same arbitrary way automatically and how the key to unlocking our highest collective potential is learning to escape that unconscious cycle.
